ACRR RESEARCH

The Impact of Social Security Policy Reforms in Ghana, and What Must Change.

The Africa Center for Retirement Research (ACRR) was privileged to be part of the Trade Union Congress’s General Council Meeting at Kasoa in the Central Region. The Executive Director of the ACRR, Mr. Abdallah Mashud, representing the Policy Research Center, presented a paper titled ‘The Impact of Social Security Policy Reforms in Ghana, and What Must Change’.

The Executive Director recounted the history of pension reforms in Ghana, spanning the period 1936 to 2015, highlighting the objectives of each reform and its impact. He added his voice to the strident calls for pension reforms in Ghana, arguing that the recent economic crisis and considerable demographic change have lent more credence to suggestions for pension reforms in Ghana.

Mr. Abdallah indicated that the TUC, as a stakeholder of the pension industry, has an important role to play in driving the needed reforms for an efficient and people-focused pension system. He commended the Trade Union Congress for effectively advocating for better policies for workers, and encouraged the Union to keep strengthening and investing in its policy research collaborations.
